Make Sure You Have the Right Tools

Before you start cleaning and maintaining your shutters, make sure you have all the equipment you need to do it correctly. This includes:

  • Microfiber cloths
  • Vacuum cleaner with suitable attachments
  • A broom or duster

How you go about cleaning your shutters involves considerations about their material. For example, wood shutters are more fragile than their faux counterparts, and hard cleaning products should be avoided to avoid staining or other damage.

USE PROPER TECHNIQUE

Let’s use Venetian blinds as an example. Start by taking off the drapes/curtains, so there’s nothing in the way when you are cleaning the shutters/blinds. Have your cleaning tools ready in advance, then get started dusting with your microfiber cloth (an old sock works too). Pinch one blind/shutter and glide the cloth across it. Do this for every blind or shutter.

CLEAN ON A ROUTINE SCHEDULE

Your shutters will inevitably accumulate dust and dirt over time. The more often you wipe them down, the better. However, when it comes to deep cleaning them, twice a year is usually plenty.

Make Sure You Have the Right Tools

How you value your shutters plays a core role in how you take care of them. If you have shutters that you don’t particularly like in your house, consider replacing them with new ones. They aren’t just a functional piece in your house, but also contribute to the overall aesthetics as well.
